Celebrating Agriculture at Ag Progress Days
Penn State’s Ag Progress Days, the Commonwealth’s largest outdoor agricultural exposition, will be held next week, from Tuesday through Thursday, Aug. 11-13, at the Russell E. Larson Agricultural Research Center, 2710 W. Pine Grove Road in Pennsylvania Furnace.
The event is hosted by Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences and showcases educational programs, current research, and the latest innovations in agricultural equipment and technology. It features more than 400 exhibitors from the United States and Canada.

National Night Out in the 199th District
Thank you to all those who attended and planned National Night Out events in the 199th on Tuesday!
It was great to visit events in Carlisle, Middlesex and South Middleton and see so many neighbors, families, first responders and community organizations coming together. My staff manned a table at the South Middleton event for the first time.
National Night Out is a wonderful reminder that strong partnerships between law enforcement and the communities they serve help keep our neighborhoods safe!

Army War College Welcome Expo
My staff and I were pleased to participate in the Carlisle Barracks Welcome Expo this week, when we had the opportunity to engage with local organizations and connect with military families as they settle into the community.
The expo serves as an excellent resource for newly arrived families, offering meaningful connections with local businesses, community organizations and essential services while highlighting everything the Carlisle area has to offer.

North Newton Township Freedom Festival
It was a pleasure to visit North Newton Township last weekend for its Freedom Festival.
We had a table there to give out state information and hear from constituents. This outstanding community event featured a variety of food trucks, engaging activities for children, an informative display highlighting the history of North Newton Township and The DeWalt Industrial Tool Company, a meaningful veterans’ ceremony and much more.
Thank you to the township staff for the invitation and organizing such a well-planned and welcoming event. Your efforts created a wonderful experience for the entire community.

PA Supreme Court Requests Change to Second Degree Murder Policy
I was a guest on WHP Radio with RJ Harris Monday morning to discuss the partisan, last minute session change to Senate legislation on second degree murder, also known as felony murder.
I explained that, just in our own backyard, a man was shot at the shooting range in North Middleton Township 16 years ago. He was only 42 years old and had a 6-year-old son, but the murderer wanted his rifle, so he shot him in the back and killed him.
The defendant was able to plead down from first degree murder to second degree murder. That same murderer can now request new sentencing based on House Democrats’ failure to act in a timely manner by refusing to take up any of the bipartisan Senate bills.
They also amended House Bill 1042 to allow seniors in jail to get out if they are sick. Only one Republican House member voted in favor of the legislation, which the Senate has no inclination to consider.
Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala’s petition to extend the deadline was denied by the PA Supreme Court. The ruling took effect without the Legislature enacting replacement sentencing, allowing approximately 1,100 inmates to request new sentencing, which will cost taxpayers millions of dollars.
Along with the cost, murderers will no doubt get out of jail earlier than a life sentence. Victims’ families were never consulted or allowed to weigh in on the matter.

LIHEAP to Provide Supplemental Payments
The Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS) is issuing a $100 supplemental payment to households that received Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) funds in the 2025-26 season and have at least one family member who is a child 6 years old or younger, is age 60 or older or has a disability.
Supplemental payments are being distributed directly to a household’s utility company or home heating fuel provider. Eligible households will receive the benefit automatically and do not need to apply.
LIHEAP is a federally funded program administered by PA DHS. It provides assistance toward a household's heating bill for renters and homeowners. If the household’s supplemental payment is issued to an electric vendor, it could be applied to cooling costs.

One Week Left in the Back-to-School Supply Drive!
There is just one week left in the American Legion Ball-Correal Post 101 Back-to-School Supply Drive. Post 101 is collecting a wide range of essential classroom supplies, including backpacks, notebooks, notebook paper, folders, binders, pencils, pens, colored pencils, crayons, markers, calculators, rulers, erasers, pencil sharpeners, glue sticks and post-it notes.
Donations can be dropped off at Post 101, located at 142 N. Hanover St. in Carlisle during the following hours: Tuesday through Friday from 3-8 p.m., Saturday from 1-8 p.m. and Sunday from 1-6 p.m.
Every contribution helps ensure local students start the school year prepared and ready to succeed.

Call Before You Dig
Aug. 11 marks National 811 Day – a day dedicated to reminding residents, contractors and utility workers of the importance of calling 8-1-1 before digging to help ensure the safety of excavation projects across the state.
Every time an underground utility line is hit, there is a risk to the contractors or homeowners who are doing the digging; to utility workers and emergency responders who are mobilized to deal with the damage; and to bystanders who live, work or travel near the locations of the incidents.
State law requires contractors and residents to contact PA One Call at least three business days prior to excavation – triggering alerts to all utilities within an intended digging area and prompting utilities to mark where their facilities are located. Pennsylvanians can dial 8-1-1 to connect with the One Call system, while out-of-state residents or businesses can call 1-800-242-1776.

Nonprofit Security Grant Fund Program Accepting Applications
The Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD) is seeking applicants for $10 million in funding to support security enhancement projects for nonprofit organizations serving diverse communities throughout the Commonwealth.
The Nonprofit Security Grant Fund Program was part of Act 83 of 2019, which directs PCCD to administer grants to nonprofit organizations that primarily serve individuals, groups or institutions that are included within a bias motivation category for single bias hate crime incidents as identified by the FBI’s Hate Crime Statistics publication. Applicants are eligible for security enhancements designed to protect the safety and security of the users of a facility located in the Commonwealth that is owned or operated by the nonprofit organization.
